The Minnie Mouse (Summer) Dress

So two weeks ago I went with Shelley to Spotlight again. We were supposed to be shopping for stuff related to our turquoise dresses, but of course we got distracted. They just stocked up on Christmas themed cottons because you know, if you were intending to make a Christmas quilt it is time to get started in the middle of August right? :)

Anyway, there was this fabric that instantly caught my eye. Red with white polka dots, perfect for the Minnie Mouse dress. My younger one is mad over Minnie Mouse, she has all kinds of Minnie stuff but no dress yet. So I bought it, and used this super easy pattern from From an Igloo - “In the Garden” Shirred Twirly Dress  and finished it in an hour.

Minnie Mouse Dress

Minnie looking mighty pleased! Note that I decided not to do the usual puff sleeves that Minnie is famous for. Partly because I was lazy to cut out the pattern, but the biggest concern here was the heat. It’s summer all year round in Singapore!

Lace straps on Minnie Mouse Dress

I used some wide lace which had been lying around for more than a year to act as the straps, I thought it made it look extra sweet!

Then I had to go back to spotlight to get more matching lace for the skirt. I also added a wide satin ribbon for a sash.

This was taken before it went into the wash. I made 2 dresses and 2 tops last week, and I decided to wash all of them together. I know… what was I thinking? I did wonder for a split second if the red will run, but I’ve been quite lucky so I took my chances. The red left pink patches on R’s new blue dress that was meant for her birthday party. It totally freaked me out, but a quick google told me that I needed to wash it again fast with some bleach. Because the dress was still wet, I managed to get the stains out using some cotton balls and bleach, and dabbed at the spots. Luckily the blue dress was saved. But then came the bad news… the minnie mouse dress now has pink spots! The strange/lucky thing is that the ribbon and the lace didn’t really turn pink. But I guess it doesn’t make a difference if I pre-washed it because it will happen anyway.

Here’s a pic of her making a monkey face. Aren’t the pink spots obvious? :(
